Trump has directed the Justice Department tatso look into Democrats over alleged threats, escalating tensions after Democrats won control of Congress.

The president accused Democrats of making threats against people after their midterm victory, but Reuters reported that he provided no evidence for the accusation.

A new confrontation between the White House and congressional Democrats is emerging after President Donald Trump directed the U.S. Department of Justice to look into Democratic lawmakers over what he described as threats against people.

In a social media post on Saturday, November 7, Trump accused Democrats of threatening individuals with impeachment and other forms of punishment. He characterized their actions as a “criminal act,” but did not provide evidence supporting the accusation, according to Reuters.

The development comes only days after Democrats secured control of Congress in the November midterm elections, setting the stage for a more confrontational relationship between the administration and lawmakers in Washington.

Trump points to Democratic letters and public comments

Trump’s post referred to what he described as threatening letters sent by Democrats to several people. Some congressional letters released publicly have sought documents and information concerning administration matters, including technology-company donations connected to a ballroom project at the White House.

The president also singled out Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin of Michigan.

Slotkin had previously said that Congress should investigate people who enabled the Trump administration’s policies. Her remarks attracted criticism from Republican lawmakers, who argued that her comments could discourage people from joining the administration.

Slotkin rejected that interpretation. In a response on Saturday, she said that individuals who break the law or misuse taxpayer money should be held accountable.

A Justice Department already facing political scrutiny

The latest request comes against the background of an earlier Justice Department investigation involving Slotkin and other Democratic lawmakers.

The lawmakers had appeared in a video urging members of the military and intelligence community not to follow illegal orders. The Justice Department investigated the group, but a grand jury declined to indict them, Reuters reported.

That earlier episode is likely to add further attention to the latest dispute over the role of federal law enforcement in politically sensitive investigations.

The Justice Department did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment about Trump’s latest instruction.

Democrats prepare to use their new congressional majority

Democrats’ midterm victory means they will take control of Congress in January. Their leaders have promised stronger oversight of the executive branch, including hearings and investigations into decisions made by the Trump administration.

That could bring increased scrutiny of immigration enforcement, federal spending, executive actions and other administration policies.

The new political balance also creates a difficult environment for legislation requiring cooperation between the White House and Congress.

The president will remain in office and retain his veto power, while congressional Democrats will gain greater authority to investigate administration activities and demand documents and testimony.

Washington faces a new period of confrontation

The dispute highlights the tensions expected as the new Congress prepares to take office.

At the center of the conflict are two competing claims: Trump says Democrats have crossed a line through what he describes as threats, while Democratic lawmakers say congressional investigations are part of their responsibility to oversee the executive branch.

Whether the Justice Department takes further action remains unclear. No outcome of a new investigation has been announced.

For now, the episode adds another major dispute to an already tense transition toward a Democratic-controlled Congress.

US & GLOBAL REPORT will continue monitoring developments from the White House and the Justice Department.
