Russia has issued a new warning to NATO over the strategic Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad, raising concerns about another escalation in relations between Moscow and the Western alliance.
According to Reuters, Russia warned that it would be prepared to resort to nuclear weapons if NATO attempted to cut off Kaliningrad.
Why Kaliningrad matters
Kaliningrad is a Russian territory located between Poland and Lithuania, both members of NATO.
Its location gives the territory major strategic importance in the Baltic region.
Moscow’s warning accused NATO of following what Russia described as a dangerous and reckless course.
The document warned of the risk of a direct armed conflict.
NATO rejects the intimidation claim
The diplomat said NATO’s response remained firm and responsible and that the alliance would continue supporting Ukraine.
A senior European defense official described the warning as serious.
The wider Baltic security picture
The Baltic region has become increasingly important since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
NATO members on Russia’s borders have increased their attention to regional security, military readiness and infrastructure protection.
The latest warning does not mean a nuclear confrontation is imminent.
Instead, it demonstrates how sharply the language surrounding Russia-NATO relations has escalated.
What happens next?
European governments will closely monitor developments around the Baltic region.
The main concern is preventing incidents or military miscalculations from developing into a broader confrontation.
