Washington has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the 2026 G20 summit as the Ukraine war remains unresolved.

WASHINGTON — The United States has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to the 2026 G20 summit in Miami, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Wednesday.

The invitation was extended as the United States continues diplomatic efforts surrounding the war in Ukraine.

Rubio said Washington hopes Putin will accept the invitation and that the summit would provide an opportunity for Russia to engage with the United States and other G20 members.

The 2026 summit is scheduled to take place at President Donald Trump’s Doral golf resort near Miami.

The Kremlin had not publicly announced whether Putin would attend.

Russia’s participation would be closely watched because the war in Ukraine remains one of the central geopolitical disputes between Moscow and Western governments.

The invitation also comes as Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy continue discussions about possible ways to end the war.

A Putin appearance at the G20 would bring Russia’s president together with leaders of major economies while negotiations over the future of Ukraine remain unresolved.
