China’s ambassador to the United States has warned that Taiwan and human rights remain sensitive issues ahead of Xi Jinping’s visit to Washington.

China has issued a warning ahead of President Xi Jinping’s meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington.

Chinese Ambassador Xie Feng said Taiwan, human rights and other issues represent “red lines” for Beijing that cannot be crossed.

Xi is visiting the United States from September 23 to 25 at Trump’s invitation. The visit comes as the two governments attempt to manage tensions surrounding trade, technology, national security and Taiwan.

The summit is taking place against a backdrop of deep strategic competition between the world’s two largest economies.

China has argued that differences should be managed through dialogue and has criticized what it describes as U.S. efforts to constrain China.

The meeting could also address areas where Washington and Beijing have sought cooperation, including economic issues and fentanyl-related concerns.

The two leaders’ discussions will be closely watched for any agreements that could reduce tensions or establish further negotiations.
